Not sure if the boys played the show in Spain last night but if they did it means Dunc has performed at 11 gigs with a broken rib and possibly (hopefully not) a punctured lung.Talk about dedication to his bandmates and UB40 fans.

Marley: Island albums "versus" earlier output

Having got into Bob's music pretty much from the Natty Dread album and all the other Island lps, the argument that goes "Marley's music was more watered down on Island" always puzzled me. It's mainly said by people who were familiar with him with The Wailers in the 60s, the ska/rocksteady songs up to African Herbsman, and especially the work with Scratch Perry.

Over the years I've gone back and explored some of the original versions of his classics. Standouts for me are Lively Up Yourself, Don't Rock My Boat and Sun Is Shining.

As great as the originals were, I still must give the Island albums the edge over them. In the 60s, The Wailers did great work yet I don't think it has the consistency of Bob's body of work as a solo artist. In the 70s, he had the advantage of a stable band and record deal, which allowed him to develop to a greater degree. Also, some of the songs that were updates are brilliant. The originals have a raw quality which is great but I don't think that was lost. Sun Is Shining from Kaya is a spine chilling classic.

Well done for carrying on as long as you did ... it was obvious that you were in pain but you seemed a bit better the last couple of gigs in Holland .... but you battled on you did great, very brave :grin: or just plain scared of RBC and his comments :lol:

Please let anyone you know who is going to the next few shows..

The upcoming concerts have been cancelled.
As you all know, Duncan broke a rib a week or so ago and has valiantly carried on performing.
Duncan has been to the doctors again today, and there is a very real possibility that he may have punctured a lung. He is returning to the UK for some medical attention and tests.
This isnt public knowledge yet, but we want to stop anyone we can leaving on long journeys to get to the shows.

I will let you know when I know more, but thats about the crux of it.

Superbowl Weekend

I know many of you are not (American) Football fans, but The New England Patriots are going up against the NY Giants. I have been a Patriot fan for years and this is going to be a great contest. Both coaches have a great admiration for each other, and both teams are singing praises to each other. This is a very exciting time for me and I wish both teams the best of luck, but I am pulling for the Patriots. I think it will be a close game, and think that the final score will be within 3 points of each other. So I will be having a few Brews and watching with intensity. Have a great weekend Loonies.

Good morning to all here. Yesterday I was almost 41 hours awake, but I'm fine now. Felt like a zombie when I arrived at home. After nearly 10 hours of sleep I'm feeling better.

Wanted to share my thoughts and feelings of the gig in Switzerland.
What should I say? This night was absolutely mind-blowin' for me. Can't find the right words for that. I enjoyed the whole show and the energy. I was totally nervous and full of joy before the concert. But when the show started so many feelings came over me. "Here I am"... really the right song for the beginnig. And the first verse of this song was so true! Anni (my best friend, know her for about 9 years) and me got up at 5 in the morning, at 8 the train was coming, 9 hours by train then, arrived at 5 in the afternoon in Switzerland. 12 hours passed by, 2 hours waiting for the beginning of the show, but I thought: whatever, feck it, absolutely worth it!

(Anni is a real friend. I often said that I want to see UB40 and that I miss them. So she said one night to me: "Ok, Conny, I'll buy the tickets for the train and you for the concert. Can't hear your wailing anymore. So I hope it will stop then and you can give their pictures to them." Me = ok. A big thank you to Anni. :D)

Then at "Boom shaka laka" I had to think of my neigbour. Was too funny when he knocked on my door and wanted that I mute this song and stop singing. Right at this moment the refrain came and I closed the door while singing "Boom shaka laka boom boom boom..." And Norman! His dancing impressed Anni and me a lot. That was very good! And the version of Maybe tomorrow! Wow! That was so great. Love the tune in that version.

While the concert I wanted to hit myself many times, I couldn't believe that I was on a UB40 concert. :laff: The energy that came over me was amazing and it felt so good. At the end of the gig I was so happy that I could share some time with UB40. This concert had a special meaning to me now.

Thank you so much guys for being so nice and kind after the gig and for your time. I appreciate that. I know it was really cold in Z�rich, really cold. Still can't believe that I've met you and talked to you. A wish came true for me. After all I was crying tears of joy. Sounds childish but it is the truth.
And my friend Anni said that she enjoyed it too. Was her first concert ever. "What a freakin' amazing show!", that's what she said. Anni want to go to another concert with me now. :laff:

Brian, one question: what was this freakin good odour you had? You smelled so good. Had this on my clothes all night long. :laff:
And a thank you to Duncan again. Perfect!

Republican Primaries

I've always taken an interest in American politics, partly because when the US sneezes, everybody catches a cold.

The GOP front-runner seems to be the somewhat wooden Mitt Romney, and he's the man apparently that the Republican establishment want. And who can blame them? Out on the right the Republicans have some real headbangers... anti-health care, anti-unemployment benefits, anti-income tax. Anybody understand them? They leave me utterly bemused.

So Obama, who arguably hasn't really come (or been allowed to come)anywhere near to meeting the expectations people had of him, must be rubbing his hands at the Republican divisions and the prospect of taking on Romney. Maybe Barry will get that second term without breaking sweat...
