In all seriousness, I don't think so. Most of the time, prostitutes are vulnerable people strapped for cash, often to feed drug/alcohol addictions. Paying for life's most basic act is dispicable in my opinion. Instead we should be helping these women to sort themselves out, cure them of their addictions, and start making some really good contribution to society

Sorry Anant, I think your response is too idealistic...

Short answer - yes. If there was no demand for it, there would be no prostitutes. Many of these women really have little choice than to ply their trade, often in highly unsafe circumstances. I sometimes think over here "we" can have a far too Victorian attitude to anything remotely sexual. Hide the evidence and pretend it doesn't exist, rather than acknowledgement and trying to create realistic solutions. Legalisation, health checks, taxes, much the way of the Dutch system (as far as I can tell) would surely benefit both the prostitutes and their clients, in many ways. Before anyone jumps down my throat I'm not advocating brothels on the high street next to the takeaway.

Babs there are many men who visit them and are willing to pay for there trade and you don't find many women pimps...Being a High class hooker is alot safer that getting pimped on the high st.

I agree with Michele.Prostitution has always existed and always will exist whether we like it or not.Therefore the only realistic course of action is to attempt to establish some sort of control over it.Prostitutes should be able to register and operate in designatad zones.That would make it easier to target them for drug rehabilitation programmes and also remove the misery these activities cause for residents in many areas.We have to deal with the world the way it is,not the way we'd like it to be.

Thanks Tom. Thought I might be having way out ideas for a while there.

I'd like to hear from our Dutchy friends, if they have any idea of how the process works in the Netherlands. I have watched programmes in the past, but I'm not up to speed on whether the system works well or not.
