I'm not British so I hope you guys don't mind me commenting on the subject.
Although it's certainly a bit more complicated than the way you present it, I agree with you Father. The notion of merit or reward for hard work [I mean REAL work] seem to be absent from the principle of royalty.
Example:
The Prince's military flying lessons...
Because the young lad wanted to learn how to fly choppers, and because learning to fly is part of the family tradition, he was granted flying lessons... payed for by the RAF ... I invite anyone who want to inquire about the cost of 1 flying hour on a turbine helicopter...
All the professionals who choose this job would normally undergo a very severe selection process in order for the RAF to make sure that the successful candidates have the right mindset and skills that enable them comply with the standard training curriculum without needing extra [very expensive] lessons.
In the meantime, British Aircrafts simply crash on the battle field for stupid reasons like poor maintenance due to tight budget... People died... That's where the joke stops to be funny...

While I applaud Prince William's desire to be a search and rescue pilot,Kathie, his GCSE results would have meant that he would have not got anywhwere near a helicopter pilot's job if he wasn't a member of the royal family.

Aye be nice if you get stuck up a mountain or in the Irish sea, you could get him picking you up....Yeep him being a member of the royal family has opened doors, But if you were in his positition you've have the same doors opened.
I was watching the series on the Queen the other week on telly, it was eye opening, you know, the Queen wanted Sanctions on SA along time before the sanctions got put on SA by the politicans...No she's not perfect, but i'd rather like with them, than without them.

Remember that the queen still plays a role in approving bills attempting to be passed by parliament, if she says no, they're not passed.
This could be useful if *somehow* the BNP got into power and by some horrendous luck their bills got through Lords and Commons, the queen would be the last one who could stop it from being passed.

That's just my point Kathie. He should go through the same selection process as everyone else. His royal status should be neither an advantage or disadvantage.Talking of royal military careers I remember the 60th anniversery celebration of the D-day landings in 2004.Veterans lined up to meet Prince Charles. These real heroes, who saved Europe from fascism, were standing there sporting one or two medals when Prince Charles was standing there wearing a curtain rail full. What sort of message does that send out about the class system in this country.

True Anant she is the last stand in someways, alot of her powers have been taken from her, i think anything like that happening and the BNP got into power she can call for a hung parliament so no party's actually in power, I'm not sure whether she can disolve parliament though, unless something really drastic happened to the country.

Hang on, those oldies our grandparents yeah the fought against fascism.
Those oldies fought for Queen & Country, i'm sure those same oldies started booing Brown or someone in Normandy the other year...It the politicans who treat our pensioners like shit not the Queen.
I'm with Anant here, if the Queen wasn't the lastline in power and we lived in a republic you've got more chance of another hilter happeniing.
