The Red-Headed Stranger with Willie Nelson was good and never seems to be on telly very often. Willie's a big-hearted rebel who comes to the rescue of the lovely Katherine Ross. Plus he wrote the feem toon, sang the feem toon. Nice film.

I must have watched westerns as a kid, with 3 channels of tv it's quite likely, but I can only really remember the series mentioned previously - High Chaparal, Bonanza and Alias Smith and Jones. That one really was a passion of mine (as we've alluded to before on this board), but it was even less about cowboys or anything resembling a "true" western than the other 2 shows. Westerns really are more my dad's favourite film genre (along with war films). Often I'll pop down and catch him watching one of an evening.

I liked the high Chaparel. The scripts and acting were uneven. And it was very 'talky', like most of those old series. But the thing I remember the most is how it LOOKED. The vivid outdoor photography under the Arizona sun. The desert, and the cloudless skies. The sweat and dust on the cowboys. And the plushy interior of the ranchouse. And blue boys weird eyes. It left a deep impression, and goes to show that for good westerns the landscape is a major character.

Blue's blue eyes used to mesmerise both me and my mum. Not sure if we watched the show for the scripts or the eyes. Other than that its just a vague memory now, can't remember the cinematography or the scenery too much, unfortunately.
