we're all in it together. part 39 [or is it 40?]
There is a luxury apartment block in the middle of London, it's called ONE HYDE PARK.
It's one of the most expensive pieces of real-estate in the world.
One bedroom apartments start at £3.6.MILLION, and penthouses are over £100 MILLION. one resident recently paid £250,000 for a PARKING SPACE !!!
despite this enormous value, the council tax on this apartment block is reasonably modest at just over £1.000 p.a.
of the 62 apartments sold, only NINE have registered to pay their council tax.
The rest of them are registered as owned by companies who operate from tax havens. The british virgin islands is the most popular destination, but apartments are also owned by companies registered in guernsey and jersey, the caymans and liechtenstein.
but who are these uber-rich who can afford to pay so much money for a roof over their heads ???
turns out that most of them are from the middle-east. oil rich despots who are fleeing the insecurity of the 'arab spring'. Corrupt cronies and army generals who have been creaming money away from their impoverished citizens and hiding it in the City of London, where it then passes through the hands of firms like delloite and PWC, and ends up in one of the many tax havens that the 'City' operates around the world.
these people will enjoy all the freedoms and advantages of living in the UK, but aren't willing to contribute to the infrastructure of this country.
and the city of london is there to make sure they don't have to pay a single penny.
