I'm desperate, let me in
I must admit I quite enjoy watching 'I'm a celebrity, get me out of here'.
It never ceases to amaze me what 'celebrities' are willing to do for that little bit more fame.
The program has re-invigorated several careers, but I'm not sure how many are willing to eat a kangaroos penis [not unsurprisingly, it tasted of pee and sh*t !] just to get a goofy interview spot on breakfast TV, but there seems to be a limitless supply of them.
there isn't enough money in the universe to get me to jump out of a helicopter at 15,000 feet, but I would rather do that than be covered in cockroaches or spiders. And I'm sure I'm not specially cowardly [or maybe I am].
it's a post-modern freak show, but it isn't voyeuristic because it isn't exploiting the public.
the 'celebs' involved are grateful for another vehicle which puts them on our TV screens. Maybe that's why they are always talking about what an 'opportunity' it is, although it is perverse to be thankful for the chance to eat a crocodiles bo**ox, or to search around in a fridge full of pigs heads.
there are two narrative threads going on here.
one is the viewers and production teams angle, which is, this is a freak show. We want the worst possible things to happen, the more distressed the celeb, the funnier it is. And this year the show has cooked up some diabolical trials for the ever-willing celebs. And ant and dec do a beautiful bob hope and bing crosby routine. Squeezing every last drop of humor from the tantrums and fall-outs.
the other story is how the celebs view the experience. they all talk about what a life-changing experience it is, or it was the best time of their lives, or they've learnt so much about themselves [although i'm not sure what life-lesson eating live worms gives us]. they try to convince themselves that they are having a profound experience, that somehow, it's made them 'better' people.
But the final crowning of king or queen of the jungle is about only one thing. it's not about the jungle in australia, it's the jungle of the tabloid press that they reign over. That is, until next year, when it becomes a case of 'the king is dead, long live the king' in the new series. The fixed grin that the losers wear on their faces is transparent, you can see in their eyes how distressed they are. Even though they all jump up and shout YAY!! when they get put back on the showbiz shelf, to be forgotten all over again.
looking forward to next year.

That is so well put - totally true ..... someone told me it was not really a jungle ....but a sterilised enclosure ....so there is no real chance of a real monster coming to eat them?
It must take a lot of confidence to put yourself forward for something like that....most unattractive proposition

Actually, that's what makes it rather pathetic for me. I've only seen part of one over here with Lou Diamond Phillips and other B actors and just couldn't bare to watch it. It was a complete freak show of has beens. Very sad. I'd rather watch someone fish.

Never seen it Jimmy but it sounds like yet another "SHOCK factor" show that's on the cusp of proper Vs entertainment.....back to the hockey game....

It's filmed near Brisbane. There is no jungle near Brisbane. All that lush jungle vegetation you see is pot plants, bought from a garden centre.
I'm waiting for the ultimate...."I'm a dancing celebrity strictly in the jungle on ice get me outa here".
Europe's collapsing, there's a civil war approaching, and the latest front page headlines in the sun, star etc are the latest reality show squabbles.
Opium for the sheeple.
Is the pub open?

I wouldn't put it on myself but I find I don't mind watching it when my wife puts it on,which is more than I can say for all the rest of the reality show.I think it's Ant and Dec's "taking the p*ss" presentation style that makes it bearable.
