Default Plea From A Railwayman

By far the biggest cause of railway accidents is now misuse of level crossings.Advances in technology and training have virtually eliminated collisions and derailments but incidents at level crossings continue to occur. The following video is cctv footage from Buenos Aires,Argentina.A bus driver ran the warning lights. The collision resulted in 11 deaths, including the bus driver. So please do yourselves, rail passengers and rail staff a big favour by observing the rules when using level crossings.Better to arrive late in your own car than even later in a hearse.

Oh my gosh! Seriously, who thinks it is a great idea to not heed the flashing lights or even the existence of a RRXing? Especially when you are responsible for transporting any others. Yikes.

I have no idea why so many people want to play chicken with level crossings, or switch lanes just to save a few seconds. Sheer madness. I would say they got what they deserve, the trouble is they always take some innocent(s) with them

I think it's probably worth observing that drivers are out of the loop of the "technology & training advances" you are refering to Tom. They [we] share your environment [as level crossing users] whereas our standards in terms of safety awareness are probably way below those you are very formally trained for as a professional. I think such a discrepancy suffices in itself for us not to share the same playground given what is at stake [safety]. The only credible solution is to scrap all the level crossings. There are so many "types" of us drivers out there that it's almost impossible to educate everybody to the same standards.
But yes I know: scarpping all the level crossings is yet again another interesting subject opposing costs an safety.
