I love "Disco" music, well what is essentially soul music with some of the rougher edges taken off. I love George McCrae, Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Candi Staton and many many more artists associated with the genre.
Interestingly the music only became known as disco because that is where you would hear the music, abit like "club" music of the 80s and 90s, thats where those songs where heard and thats how it became described by the media. Its all dance music and could describe 99.9% of most popular music in the last 50 years. I was watching a documentary on the bee gees (I love them) and they say that they are forever known as a disco band because of Saturday night fever. They explained that the album was never intended to be a disco album, they had just offered some songs they had already recorded to a low budget film that happened to become a monster hit. They did admit that when they wrote those now famous songs they were trying to emulate a clean soul sound that they had heard in New york clubs at the time. They were never trying to deliberatley write "disco" songs, but admitted that they were happy that they are now held up as the definitve answer when someone is asked what "disco" songs are. |

yes mr C, I agree with that.
My DJ mates call it 'four to the floor'. A constant bass drum with a snare on every other beat. That's the 'boom-boom' that irritates those that don't really like dance music. The 'repetitive beat' that thatcher tried to have banned. It's the basic building block of disco and house music. I think, when people say they don't like disco, they usually mean the more chart orientated songs. there's a world of difference between jive bunny and marshall jefferson, even though, technically, they are the same genre of music. like anything else, there's good and bad. |

The whole Disco generation escapes me. I was never into Polyester suits, or plastic shoes. I never had any chest hair so I could'nt wear my gold chains around my neck with a half buttoned up shirt. When I stood in line at a disco in NY, I was told that "I was not the right type" to be admitted by some snarky bouncer. Disco leaves a bad taste in my mouth even to this day. I always loved the soul music and the Detroit sound. Loved the Blues all types, Chicago, Mississippi Delta, to Dixieland Jazz. Reggae is my absolute love, thank God the Disco era has passed.

OK, question (a bit trite, so be prepared)...what's your preference, disco or northern soul? I ask because they were both popular around the same time. I'm gonna go for disco here (I'm shocked at myself

I haven't heard anywhere near enough Northern Soul to comment
I only wish I had. It didn't seem to permeate anyone I knew around here so my knowledge is sadly lacking. However, I did/do like what I have heard. And no, I couldn't tell you song titles/artists You should really be asking our Sal
