what comrade tom said.
don't get any of it. it seems all part of the nostalgia for a time that never existed. where the aristocracy were decent progressive types, concerned for the welfare of their servants. Yeah right ! I blame downton abbey and upstairs-downstairs. mindless shallow drivel with no historical credibility. reality was, under the sumptuous frocks, they were all wearing jack-boots. |

Agree with you about those shows.Totally inaccurate portrayal of life in those days when they were sending kids up chimneys and down mines.

Street parties? We never had one in 1977 let alone 2002. Can't see one happening this year either, thankfully. As much as I like a party, I wouldn't particularly be that cheery being forced to 'celebrate' Her Maj's jubilee.

Im another one who dosent get the affection that is shown to the royal family. They exist living really brilliant privaleged lives whilst the rest of us are treated as mere fodder who are barely scraping by in these very tough times.
I dont see why I should celebrate that fact. All this pomp and circumstance is just perpetuating our continued slavery and serfdom. This isnt the middle ages and we shouldnt be peasants in awe of the families who live in bigger houses than us. I was born in 1977, so obviously I dont remember that jubilee year, but have spoke to my Mum about it, on the road where my Irish grandparents lived there were street parties and my grandparents refused to take part in them which inflamed some hatred from the neighbours. They didnt get the fact that because of the English throne wanting Ireland as part of the empire and illiegially occupying it (still to this day), we personally have had family members murdered trying to overthrow another imperialistic invasion on behalf of the British crown, so why the hell would we want to have a party to celebrate some woman whos previous ancestors have been responsible for killing ours?. 2002 came and the sheer disgust at seeing that concert at Buck house with all of those supposedly "anti establishment" pop stars practically wetting their knickers at a chance to entertain the queen was disgraceful in my eyes. Brian May and Ozzy Osbourne in particular have sullied my love of their former bands forever now. I wont be paying tribute to the archaic and down right ludicrous figurehead this year, as far as Im concerned she wouldnt give a monkeys cuss for us, so why should I wave a flag for that old bag?, how exactly are we going to move forward into a more equal and fair society whilst we still are in awe of the elite?. |
