Default Cover bands

I have had the recent misfortune of going to see a run of "original musicians" whose musicmanship I simply did not admire....

Compare with New Years Eve where we ended up in one of the old town caves ....smoky ....with a 7 peice band covering/putting their own stamp on swingy dancy big band hits ....these musicians were massively talented ...creating enjoyment and the atmosphere was cracking..

Then I mention them as being "great" ...and another musician looks at me with derison saying " they are only a cover band"

It is such a snobby petty thing to say ..would it be fair to say that the only people who would say that are those who are simply not as skilled?..

I am totally bewildered

It depends....there are good cover bands who are faithful to the originals, playing note for note copies of someone else's song. Then there are cover bands who offer their own more personalised performance. Both can be entertaining, depending on the listener's mood, though I'm more into the latter.

Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra are known more for their interpretations of other people's music, even music that was recorded and in the public domain before they began their careers. But no-one calls them 'cover artists'.
