I wonder if anyone's tried setting any of his sonnets to a reggae beat?

strangely enough tom, when I'm writing lyrics, I often come up with what were originally shakespearean quotes. I didn't know that of course, not being much of a scholar. But when you need a familiar phrase to put into a song [and songwriting is often the conscious manipulation of cliches], it seems like dear will has already got there first. Not only that, he did it poetically, so there wasn't much need to edit whichever quote you've nicked. So, I suppose the answer is 'yes, he was [and still is] all that.'

Forsooth, much gratitude for the views of thou and the musing of others so verily.

And there's my problem with it,can't make head nor tail of it.We did Merchant Of Venice for O level.I managed to pass because the teacher was good at explaining what was going on,something I would never been able to work out myself from the dialogue. My dad loved his stuff, could never see the appeal myself.Looks like I'm in a minority though.

You're a heathen to the world of literature Tom

Mind you, I can appreciate Shakespeare a lot more now than during my O Levels...

Funny you should say that,my dad had a poem published once.He got two free copies of the book it was in.When I went over there one day he told me about it and I was so chuffed for him. Then he said "I gave the other one to your sister because I knew you wouldn't want one because you're a phillistine".He came straight out with it,I couldn't believe it.

this is where I turn into "boffin mode"

the main thing people don't understand about Shakespeare, and causes them problems with his work, is that Shakespeare never wrote a book, he wrote plays, his works were written to be performed, not read

Here endeth "boffin mode"
