Default Just back from Cocoa Beach

hi groovers..........

went up to cocoa beach (florida) for a couple of days to help a mate with a sick relative and saw some advertising around the town......

the large billboard that we passed (at a fair clip) had me so shocked that i made her do a u-turn so i could see it more closely..... it was so reminiscent of the billboard that i saw in 2006, when i drove up for a UB40 gig at the Cocoa Beach Pier.....i only wish that it would be UB40 playing there again in a couple of weeks.....this was one of a half-dozen billboards i noticed scattered around this small florida city.....

additional advertising was taken at the Pier last night.....

Once again - BIG UB40, little AC...

I'm wondering what Maxi's reaction to ttvo will be considering what ttvo has said about Maxi lately....

This is just not playing fair. Once, twice, or even a handfull of times and you could forgive them and put it down to lack of communication, but this is ridiculous. Ali's people should be making it absoloutely clear about what is and what isn't acceptable to the promotor, who should then in turn be relaying the message onto advertisers and ticket sellers. It makes you wonder what they're actually telling the promotor.

Nobody could argue that the people going to that gig won't be thinking they're going to see UB40.

If I was Ali I would be mortified that I had to go to these measures to sell my gig - it must be so embarresing for him.

But really this has all gone to far now. It's just not on.

Helena i'll agree with alot off what you said, it's taking the piss.
I'm trying to keep in the middle, without dragged old coal up, on one hand you've got an interview which is postitive, then were back to the same old promotion issue, were ub40 name is the biggest name on the poster.

OK a question for Brian & Jim.

What do the promoters expect from the band when the original contract is drawn up...When you go to the promoters, there aim is selling ticket & making money....Apart from the obvious you turn up, what are the promoters looking for from established artists to sell those tickets...Do they stipulate over contents of shows, or promotion ? There publising the bands along time before they get you in the venue...i'm not having a pop at anyone i'm just wondering what info is given and taken along time before the show takes place.

i know what you mean about dragging up old coal. i'm sick to death of the ali talk on here and i think it was great that he did an interview the other day without bringing up the whole ub40 thing. if he'd done that from the beginning i would have had a lot more respect from him - but hopefully this latest interview is how he means to go on. BUT I really don't think it can be ignored and swept under the carpet when there are issues that directly affect the band. I think this advertising issue is potentially damaging for them. People are clearly going along to these concerts thinking they are going to see UB40 and thats a BIG issue. The more it is ignored the more they will carry on doing it.

I compare this dribble to a father who is successful, and a son who is trying to live in his fathers footsteps. The only way you can make it on your OWN, is to rely on your own accomplishments. For example Tarrus Riley (son of the late and great Jimmy Riley) does not Bill himself as Jimmy Rileys son, Tarrus. It may be mentioned who his father is in articles written about him, but his claim to fame is his own music. His own accomplishments. His own talent. There is no deception when you go to see him. hey y'all.......just wanted to let y'all know that i hadn't meant to keep a s**tstorm going....just thought (like many) that it doesn't sit right that the advertising, especially on the large billboards, is kind of deceptive......all that we could see as we approached it and went past was UB40 and just at the last minute saw ali's name ....... i know that since he is not as famous here in the US, it is justifiable to let people know where they may have heard of him but i feel that since he is the performer, his name should be larger than the source of his fame....as long as it is alright with the true UB40, of course...

I just don't understand how this can continue to happen. I emailed the Cocoa Beach venue months ago about this. Their response was that they knew who they were getting and it was such a treat to have Ali because he rarely makes appearances in the US. I was like, WHAT? He NEVER makes appearances in the US, no one knows who the F he is. This person also went on to say that Ali Campbell had a very successful solo career and was selling out stadiums ALL OVER THE WORLD. I don't know where this person got that information, I tried to set them straight, but I don't think they got it.

It's all very sad. I'm really looking forward to the REAL UB40 coming stateside. That's where my money will be going.
