slam dunc.
as i am the only witness to duncs' unfortunate accident, I thought i would give the loonies a detailed report.
It was very early on in the tour, we were on a ferry from talinn and helsinki, and dunc had given me the nod to go on deck for a quick smoke. it was a calm crossing, but it had been snowing. we stood under the covered area specially supplied for lepers and people with TWO heads.. . . oh, and smokers.
we were just about to go back down when dunc decided he was going to take a look further down the deck. as soon as he set foot on the area that had not been protected by the cover something strange happened. he made a sudden gymnastics move that left him floating in mid air with both feet above his head. he seemed to hover there for what seemed like seconds, then he suddenly dropped to the ground in the style of wily cyote [a pannicky bemused look on his face, and his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth]. And with a boat-shuddering bang he hit the deck hard on his back, with his feet still in the air. i think the captain thought he must have hit a rock.
at first i was impressed at how enthusiastically dunc had thrown himself into the job of creating a snow angel. But when i caught a glimpse of his skeleton hovering three feet above his body I thought he might have at least winded himself. Then. when his face turned whiter than the snow he had just slipped on, and a niagra of sweat cascaded from every pore on his body, I knew that it wasn't just dunc messing around. Add the primal scream and and the sudden nausea, and the lack of ability to breath, it was beginning to look like a job for casualty.
after helping him up off the floor and waiting till he could remember his own name, I commented that it might be a nice idea if they were to give some warning. At this point, we both looked up, and on the wall next to where we had been smoking there was a poster with a stick-man who had been to exactly the same gymnastics school having adopted the self-same hanging in-the-air - feet-above-the-head pose i'd seen from dunc just moments before. Because the stick figure was inside a large red circle, with a red line through it we guessed this might have constituted some kind of warning.
this part i found very amusing, and I know dunc would have seen the funny side if he could breath and didn't have conan the barbarian digging a very large sword into his body. The similarity in body position between dunc and his stick-figure friend was uncanny, almost as if he had modelled for the warning poster.
anyway, it turned out to be worse than we thought, he has busted a rib and is in excruciating pain every time he moves his eyes from left to right. Moving any other parts of his body [like a finger] puts his pain meter up to 11.
the doctor has ordered immediate three-week bed-rest.
we thought the tour was over, but we've since found that large doses of horse tranquilizer and the threat to kill his whole family if he doesn't continue, seems to have convinced him to carry on.
doctor says he will improve so long as he doesn't talk, laugh, breath , yawn or move.
at the moment we are all enjoying trying to make him giggle.
seriously though. I could tell at the time that it must have REALLY FKN HURT !!
dunc has already been heroic by doing the last five shows, we're hoping it might start to ease, but at the moment there isn't much sign of that.
our finger and toes are crossed that he can continue.
I suppose the moral of this story is. . . . . . .SMOKING IS VERY BAD FOR YOU !!
