For those that keep moaning on and on about UB40 doing covers. Answer this question: Name the last UB40 album that had NO COVERS on it whatsoever. You have to go back all the way to Guns In The Ghetto! Point is: There are usually at least one, maybe two covers on all the UB40 albums. Even their very first album, Signing Off had a couple of covers!

They simply cannot help which songs become hits and which ones don't. I'm sure if the band had their way, their original songs would have just as much chart success as their covers, but it just hasn't always happened that way...but SO WHAT?! I personally think that having all the success with covers sends a good signal in itself....because most of the time, their versions have outsold the originals!

I just simply end my part of the discussion with this quote from Robin from about ten years ago. He said "Nobody ever said to Sinatra 'write your own songs"

Totally agree.UB40 have nothing to prove as songwriters.The new album will feature many originals,cant wait.

Covers are great, especially when they're balanced beautifully against originals.

However, when I think of my top 100 UB songs, I'd have to say about 70 or 80 of them are originals. I personally prefer a lot of the original songs to the covers. Obviously that's not going to be to everyone's taste. I also prefer the angry political tracks to the softer tunes. Again, that's not to everybody's taste.
